Broadband Internet Security Recommendations

The internet shouldn’t feel scary to you. It’s a world-changing tool and you should be a part of it. If you protect yourself properly, there’s no reason why you can’t surf the web, send electronic mail, buy the occasional book or CD from amazon.com, and look at a friend’s online photo album.

Here are our guidelines for how you can use the internet while protecting yourself from thieves, scammers, and viruses:

FirewallDownload and Install ZoneAlarm Security Suite
What does a firewall do?

A firewall blocks suspicious internet traffic to and from your computer. A good firewall identifies hackers and blocks their access attempts. It also attempts to make your computer invisible to anyone on the Internet who is scanning for open computer ports.

Why should I install ZoneAlarm?

A firewall is a must have for anyone who regularly accesses the internet — especially those with an “always on” broadband connection like DSL or cable modem. Hackers and scammers use software programs that scan computer ports across the internet looking for openings and weaknesses. Without a firewall your computer is more vulnerable to these programs.

If your computer is penetrated, hackers may install keystroke logging sofware (sofware that logs every keystroke made on your computer and is then sent to a remote location) or turn your computer in to a “zombie” (a computer that is controlled remotely in order attack other web servers). This would not be a good thing.

Cost:
There are different versions of ZoneAlarm. We recommend either the Security Suite or the free version of just the firewall.

Web Browser – Download and use Firefox as your web browser.

What does a web browser do?

A web browser is the software that lets you view web pages. Most computers have Microsoft Internet Explorer installed by default. Scammers can use security holes in your browser to install malicious software.

Why should I install Firefox?

Microsoft Internet Explorer will continue to be targeted by scammers, thieves and virus writers because it has the largest market share (90%+), has regular problems with serious security holes, and many people in the tech world don’t like Microsoft and get a kick out of targeting users of Microsoft products.

Firefox, on the other hand, has great features like tabbed windows and built-in pop-up blocking, is much less likely to be targeted by scammers, and appears to be more secure.

It’s developed by an open-source community that distributes the software at no charge. Over 20,000,000 copies have already been downloaded.

What does an email client do?

An email client allows you to send and recieve email messages. Some clients run on your computer and others are web-based, like Yahoo mail or Hotmail.

One of most widely used clients in Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.

Virus Protection
Download and Install ZoneAlarm Security Suite
Any computer connected to the internet should be protected by up-to-date anti-virus program.

What is a computer virus and how can I become infected?

Computers can be infected by viruses and worms — small pieces of computer code that replicate and move from one computer to another. This code can infect your computer when you view an infected email, web page, or if your computer has been compromised by an electronic intruder.

What can happen if my computer becomes infected?

Viruses and worms can delete files on your computer, collect personal information on your hard drive, install keystroke logging sofware (sofware that logs every keystroke made on your computer and is then sent to a remote location), or turn your computer in to a “zombie” (a computer that is controlled remotely in order attack other web servers).

Even worse, many worms and viruses use your personal address book to email infected files to all of your friends and family. Nice. Learn more about viruses and worms on Wikipedia.com.

Which virus protection should I use?

We recommend ZoneAlarm Security Suite. It combines excellent firewall, anti-virus, email security, phishing protection, spam blocking, and web filtering all in one package.

I started using computers in 1978 on the Apple II and was first online (using my “high-speed” 1200 baud modem) in 1989. I’ve managed web sites for several Fortune 500 companies and for internet start-ups. Working for one of those start-ups is what brought me into the world of credit. I was part of the the executive team that ran QSpace, the first company to offer credit reports over the internet.
